Rising Country/Americana Artist’s Second Single Follows ‘Meet You in the Middle,’ Spotify’s No. 1-ranked Song in Fort Worth and Plano (and No. 3 in Garland)

It doesn’t take Texans long to catch on to an artist who expresses authenticity though engaging melodies and compelling lyrics. That would explain why Austin singer-songwriter Parker McCollum found his name at the top of Spotify airplay lists in two major Texas markets, and at No. 3 in a third, with “Meet You in the Middle,” the first single from his debut album, The Limestone Kid (February 2015, PYM Music). His just-released follow-up, “High Above the Water,” is already gaining airplay on stations throughout the state.

Justin Frazell, program director of Fort Worth’s 95.9 the Ranch and host of the nationally syndicated “Texas Red Dirt Roads” radio show, was one of the first to jump on McCollum’s increasingly crowded bandwagon. “Twenty seconds into ‘Meet You In the Middle,’ I was hooked,” Frazell reports. “I knew that if this was a sign of what was to come from this new artist, decisions on his future singles would not be hard to make. What an incredible talent!”

Maybe that’s what John Nova Lomax III heard when assessing those Spotify lists for, noting, “[Fort Worth’s] chart-topper is country artist Parker McCollum (also popular in Plano), who has a bit of a Hayes Carll quaver to his prematurely rough-and-ready tenor.”

Carll is one of several influences McCollum cites; the list also includes Ryan Bingham, Ryan Adams, John Mayer, the Drive-by Truckers, Stevie Ray Vaughan, the Rolling Stones and the Highwaymen. He also mentions former Texas band the Dedringers and his brother, Tyler McCollum, who wrote one of the album’s 11 tracks and co-wrote two others. Their cousin Austen Biggers contributed another; the rest are from Parker’s pen.

Tour stops at such venerable venues as Floore’s Country Store (Aug. 15) and the Cheatham Street Warehouse (Aug. 22) and events such as the Conroe Cajun Catfish Festival (Oct. 9) are drawing even more new fans to this young new artist.
